I'm incredibly awed and downright humbled seeing everything your teams are doing.

The Radical Rosies from King-Drew High School have pre-registered 50+ of their students to vote. San Fernando High School's DIY Girls are coding and constructing their safety device. Chicas Verdes from Manual Arts High School are holding their famous farmer's markets to sell what they've produced at their school garden. Mujeres Con Animo from Animo Leadership Charter are making great progress on their documentary highlighting immigrant women's stories.   

These teams are also incredibly consistent in highlighting their work and integrating social media into their project. We know your teams are doing amazing work and we want to see it as well - please look to update your websites and social media platforms regularly.

• International Day of Women and Girls in Science is Tuesday, February 11th - STEM teams can post about themselves, what they're working on, tagging @girls_build, and using hashtags #girlsbuildSTEM + #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience + #womeninSTEM + girlsinSTEM! 
• Follow each other - we feature teams on the regular and it's a way to be connected to our community of Girls Build teams.

WHO: LA County High School Juniors + Seniors
WHAT: Get placed into your dream summer, paid internship
WHEN: March 1, 2020

Description: An annual initiative of LA Promise Fund, The Intern Project (TIP) places deserving high school students in paid internships based on their skills and career interests paired with a company’s unique values and needs. Students apply online, then we make matching recommendations based on their interests and the company’s job description(s).

Interns also participate in college and career related workshops such as: financial aid and college app webinars, resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and networking strategies workshops. We provide ongoing coaching to ensure their placement is successful.

WHO: Girls in LA County, Ages 14-18
WHAT: Free social change documentary filmmaking + community activism youth program 
WHEN: Applications due April 20, 2020

Description: Over the course of five weeks, students learn how to create their own short documentary and how to use the medium of film to affect positive social-change in their communities.This is a free program to empower and equip girls interested in filmmaking and the arts. 

They become the content creators for Women's Voices Now's Empathy-to-Action Film Club, guiding viewers to champion women’s and girls’ rights, locally and globally, one call to action at a time.

Additionally, they are holding a smaller workshop series on Feb 16 and March 1 in DTLA. Open to all girls ages 14-18 to sign up.

Last week, the Radical Rosies from King/Drew Medical Magnet High School successfully held a voter registration drive that pre-registered 50 teens over two-days. 

We saw how they leveraged their social media to raise awareness of the event, timed it with their school's basketball game to tap into an existing flow of people, and meaningfully engaged each registrant to take these amazing photos. This is a team looking to win it all. 🗳🇺🇸

​Larchmont Charter School Girls Build undertook the classic bake sale to fundraise for their civic engagement project, which includes creating care packages for the homeless. 

We encourage all teams to fundraise as part of their project - it is a key way to maximize your impact + sustainability! 💰 💵  

G.A.L.S. - Giving And Leading, Succeeding from Alliance Alice M. Baxter College-Ready High School are saving the bees this year! To do it, they've also undertaken a fundraising effort selling kool-aid gummies. 🐝 🍭  

Major props for, again - taking the steps beyond what's required to maximize your project impact and team sustainability. 

​Congratulations to all the Aspirations in Computing winners on our Girls Build teams. We know many of our schools had regional winners. Special shout out to Kary C from Lennox Math Science and Technology Academy who won the National Award! 🥇🔬

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
Sign up to be a Paid Election Worker for the Presidential Primaries!

Audience: High School Students in Los Angeles County
When: March 2020
Description: Los Angeles County is looking for high school students to participate in its Student Election Worker Program. Starting in March 2020, the voting period will expand from 1 day to 11 days. This means students will now be able to serve on weekends and/or election day. And the more days students serve the more they’ll earn, with student stipends ranging from $180 to $580. Bilingual students are highly needed!
